Erb’s palsy is a condition caused by damage to the brachial plexus nerves, located in the upper arm. Depending on the severity of the injury, Erb’s palsy may manifest as partial or total paralysis of the affected arm. Typically, this condition occurs after a difficult delivery, particularly when the baby becomes lodged in the mother’s birth canal or when the baby is breech and is delivered vaginally.

Risk Factors of Erb’s Palsy
It is possible for excessive stretching, pulling or tearing on the brachial plexus nerves to occur during any delivery, but there are certain factors that put your baby at a greater risk for Erb’s palsy.
These risk factors include:
- Shoulder dystocia; one or both shoulders get stuck in the birth canal and the baby suffered injury when it was too forcefully delivered
- The use of forceps
- The use of a vacuum extractor
- Prolonged labor
- Breech birth
- Failure to order a C-section
- Excessive maternal weight gain
- High infant birth weight
- Small maternal size
If your child has not been formally diagnosed with Erb’s palsy but you suspect he or she may have suffered shoulder dystocia or a similar injury during delivery, look for signs of Erb’s palsy, such as favoring one arm or weakness/inability to move one arm.
If you notice these or other symptoms, seek medical treatment for your child right away. Then, contact a New Jersey Erb's palsy attorney at our firm for a free consultation.
